To Infinity And Beyond

We are thrilled to announce that Cardpool has been acquired by Blackhawk Network, a leading third party network for gift cards. You can read our official press release, and learn more at TechCrunch and GigaOM.

We think this is awesome news for all of our customers and want to make sure you know what’s happening and what this means for you.

What’s happening?

Technically speaking, Cardpool has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Blackhawk Network. From a practical standpoint, Cardpool is about to become much bigger and better for all of our customers.

Cardpool has been and always will be fanatically committed to providing the best customer experience and services possible. While we can’t share what we have planned for you quite yet, we can promise that the services you have come to know and love will only get better. To say that we are ridiculously excited for what’s in store for you would be an understatement.

Why is this happening?

Cardpool makes it ridiculously easy to buy and sell pre-owned gift cards. We help our rapidly growing loyal customer base save tens of millions of dollars each year, by offering the simplest, safest, and most convenient gift card exchange service.

Blackhawk Network is a leading provider of gift card, prepaid, telecom, and financial products. Every week, they reach more than 200 million consumers spanning 17 countries in a network of leading grocery, big box, convenience, pharmacy, and specialty stores including Safeway, Kroger, Tesco, Giant Eagle, Ahold, and GiftCardMall.com. Blackhawk Network helped define the gift card industry and took it mainstream by offering a convenient and powerful network for prepaid gifting.

When our two companies began discussing partnership opportunities earlier this year, we were amazed by how complementary our companies were. We started asking ourselves, what would happen if we took our gift card exchange service and combined it with their gift card network? After carefully discussing our visions, core values, and most importantly, our customer-centric cultures, we realized we could provide the best possible service to the most customers by working together under one roof.

We have no doubt that all of our customers will greatly benefit from Blackhawk’s incredible network and expertise around gift cards and prepaid gifting, and we look forward to bringing you greatly enhanced services in the near future.

What is the Cardpool Story?

We started Cardpool in 2009 on the belief that no gift card should go unused. In 2010, consumers in America spent nearly $100 billion on gift cards, so it is only natural that some of these gift cards remain unused in our wallets, purses, and sock drawers. Our mission is to solve the problem of having unused gift cards by creating the best customer-centric gift card exchange service in the world, where customers can buy, sell, and trade their gift cards. By gathering all gift card buyers and sellers in one place, we believe we can help everyone get exactly what they want, whether it’s a discount to a favorite store, a different gift card, or simply cash.

When we publicly launched Cardpool in 2010, many people thought we were crazy. Some even called us names. We were the underdogs. Underfunded. Understaffed. Very late to the game. Some competitors had 20 times more capital than us, 10 times more employees than us, and a 4-year head start. Skeptics asked us, how could our tiny little startup possibly compete with our much larger and more established competitors?

Perhaps we were a little crazy and a little delusional, but we had one secret weapon. We decided from the very beginning, we would always be fanatically passionate about serving our customers. And thankfully, our customers have given us the opportunity to earn their business.

Thanks to all of our customers who gave our little startup a chance, we experienced tremendous growth during the 20 months following launch. Although we can’t share our sales numbers with you, we can tell you that while we originally hoped to make $100,000 in gift card sales in 2010, we did quite a bit better than that and due to overwhelming demand, are now processing over $100,000 in gift cards PER DAY.

This makes our small little startup not so small, reaffirming our belief that the success of our business begins and ends with the customer experience, and that a small group of incredibly talented and passionate people can accomplish anything.

The best part is, this is only the beginning. Starting today, with Blackhawk Network, we have a very aggressive plan to make Cardpool much bigger and better than ever before and we can’t wait to show you what we have planned.

What’s next?

All of us at Cardpool would like to thank all of our family, friends, investors, advisors, and most importantly, customers, for giving our startup a chance to succeed. Whether we are helping customers save money on wedding rings for loved ones, care packages for troops, supplies for victims of natural disasters, or items for every day living, we are truly honored to be given such a wonderful opportunity to positively touch and affect the lives of all of our customers.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you over the past two years. As we look into the future, we are excited to further enhance our service and offerings for you, and look forward to serving you, “to infinity, and beyond.”

Thanks,
Anson, Tim, and the entire team at Cardpool

Facebook gift cards, available at a Target near you

See those $10 iTunes gift cards? We don't accept them.

This is a question we get every now again. To be clear, the answer is “no.”

What do I mean? For example, a customer has three Walmart cards valued at $10 each. Individually, Cardpool wouldn’t accept these as discount gift cards because we have a $25 gift card minimum. Some people get the creative idea of selling us all three cards for a $30 value. While we could technically accept this, it actually takes up too much time on the processing end to do so. So, wanting to get your payment out as soon as possible, we don’t accept multiple gift cards for the same merchant under $25 each.

But don’t despair. You can easily take these gift cards to the retailer and purchase another gift card for the total value. The customer with three $10 Walmart gift cards? He can drop by a convenient Walmart, buy a new gift card for $30, and pay for the new card with his smaller cards. This transaction is not an unusual one – I worked in retail and saw this happen quite a bit.

How do you feel about this policy? Do you have further questions? Let us know in the comments!

7 Best Halloween Pumpkins

by Amy Nievera on September 21, 2011

When it’s time for Halloween, what do you think of? Costumes, ghouls, vampires, and candy? The first thing that pops into my mind is always the song from The Nightmare Before Christmas, “This Is Halloween.” This is Halloween, this is Halloween / Pumpkins scream in the dead of night…

Besides the candy though, Halloween makes me think of carving pumpkins and the amazing works of art some people actually accomplish with an orange gourd, a knife, and a spoon. Here are 7 of the best carved pumpkins I found on Flickr.

Avoid Gift Cards In These 3 Scenarios

by Amy Nievera on September 20, 2011

Gifted Hero

You can be a gifting superhero if you keep these in mind!

Generally, gift cards have the reputation of being the best option for a present. How can you go wrong? You pick a store you know the person likes and he or she gets to do some shopping. Fun!

But – there’s always a “but” – sometimes, a gift card isn’t the best idea. In the following scenarios, we wouldn’t suggest a gift card.

  1. The gift-receiver hates getting gift cards. What! People can hate getting gift cards? Yes, sadly, this is true. A certain portion of the population believes gift cards show a lack of consideration or thoughtfulness. If you know your recipient may hold this opinion or something similar, it’s safer getting something else. If you don’t know what to get, ask the recipient’s family, friends, or co-workers. Or ask the person casually about his interests! If all else fails, you can always stalk the Facebook profile.
  2. The receiver doesn’t need anything. This sometimes happens with weddings and commitment ceremonies. Though it is normal practice for the engaged couple to set up a gift registry, they may already have everything they need. In this case, a gift card to Bed Bath and Beyond or Williams Sonoma will most likely end up unused (or sold to us). Some couples set up honeymoon registries so you can chip in on different activities they can do on their honeymoon. If you’re not into that, donate in their name to their favorite charity or a cause you know they care about.
  3. It’s your wedding/exclusive relationship/first kiss/first date/etc. anniversary. Remember scenario #1, where the gift-receiver hates gift cards because they show a lack of consideration? Gift cards for these situations are clearly signs of thoughtlessness. There are exceptions, of course: for example, your partner loves clothes but has a difficult time finding things that fit. You can’t just grab any old thing off the rack. Here, I would say a gift card is acceptable if accompanied with a small thoughtful token because you have kept in mind your significant other’s likes, dislikes, and problems. Otherwise, gift cards are much too impersonal for these romantic dates.
What other scenarios can you think of, where you wouldn’t give a gift card? But don’t forget – discount gift cards are some of the easiest ways to save when gift buying. Grandma doesn’t have to know you bought her a cashmere throw with a discount Bloomingdale’s gift card. Even if Grandma knows, she might just be proud she has such a frugal grandchild!

Victoria’s Secret Merchandise Credit [Gift Card Tips]

by Amy Nievera on September 16, 2011

I Heart Pink Free Creative Commons Victoria's Secret Dogtag

Hello, bombshell!

Thanks to our lovely customers, Cardpool recently found out something important about Victoria’s Secret merchandise credits – VS merchandise credits are not usable online.

The horror!

How do you tell if a card is merchandise credit? Under the card listing on the Cardpool website, it will say “This is a merchandise credit redeemable for $XX.XX worth of merchandise.” Sometimes (very rarely), this won’t be listed under a card. But if you receive a Victoria’s Secret gift card that is plain, solid pink with the logo across the front – this is a VS merchandise credit card.

Don’t worry if you bought a discount gift card for Victoria’s Secret’s website and it turned out to be merchandise credit. With our 100-Day Purchase Guarantee, just mail the unused card back to us with a note stating this is a return. We’ll refund the full amount to your credit card as soon as we receive the card.

Easy, right? What problems have you run into with other gift cards or merchandise credits?
